The house was built in 1919 for prominent surgeon Dr. J Ernest Stokes, who was a resident at Salisbury's first hospital. The house was carefully renovated to provide a modern and luxurious guest experience while retaining all of the original style and craftsmanship. Thanks to its historical relevance and meticulous preservation, Across the Pond Bed and Breakfast has earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places. Built over a century ago in the Colonial Revival style, Across the Pond is a historic Salisbury, North Carolina bed and breakfast that becomes even more charming as you discover the details that can be found throughout the house. You'll notice original characteristics like pocket doors, leaded glass, cedar closets, and quarter-sawn oak floors, and tastefully elegant furnishings that match the charm of the house.
There are many places for guests to relax around the house, with sitting areas perfect for a chat, reading a book, or perhaps a cup of tea. The library features a roll-arm tufted leather sofa and a large collection of books to pique your curiosity. Another comfortable spot is the sunroom which is the ideal spot for toasting to the evening with friends and family. Outside there is a patio dining set and gardens that include shrubs, tulips, and blooming trees.
The three guest rooms have been updated to include modern comforts and luxuries, and get their namesake from 20th-century artists whose work hangs on the walls. Each feature en suite baths, sitting areas, WiFi, flat-screen TVs, and crisp bed linens. The expansive Picot room has a king-sized sleigh bed, a large walk-in shower, and lots of light streaming in from five windows. The glamorous Presley room has a queen-size bed with crystal tufted headboard, original wainscoting, and a modern bathroom with natural lighting. The Matisse suite spans the entire length of the second floor and has an apartment-like feel thanks to its separate sitting area and oversized bathroom.
Mornings at Across the Pond begin with an English Breakfast served in the dining room. Savory meals include eggs, bacon, sausage, loaded hash browns, frittata, and sautéed veggies. Also included with your stay is the evening reception with a choice of drink and fresh pastries and other treats.

The Walkers became the owners of what was to become Across the Pond Bed and Breakfast in 2013 when they sought a retirement adventure after finishing their careers. Andrew and Mary hail from northern England and were taken around the world by their jobs finally settling in Pittsburg where they raised their family. Salisbury was the perfect place to relocate to, it has small-town charm, warmer winters, and wonderful history as found at the bed and breakfast. Your hosts are excited to share their home--and the secrets it holds from the past--with guests. Mary bakes fresh scones served with jam using her grandmother's recipe.
